On January 9th 2019, Aleksandra was welcomed as a speaker at the European Parliament’s Africa Summit where she joined esteemed experts, policymakers, academics, and journalists to discuss the issue of good governance and democracy in Africa. Aleksandra’s

remarks focused on the risks that alternative political models pose for democratic governance – in particular the risk of ‘digital authoritarianism’ and the Chinese political model.

“[These alternatives] don’t have to work as long as they are plausible models toward which some countries can aim. If more African governments start to see this kind of digital authoritarianism as a viable alternative to liberal democracy, for example – or what China is proposing – they’ll feel no pressure to liberalize. Even if the models ultimately fail, attempts to implement them could last for a long time,” Aleksandra said.

Full remarks will be available soon on the ECR Group’s website.
